IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test. It is required for people who want to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA.
Types of IELTS Tests
1. Listening
Time: 30 minutes
Format: 4 recordings (monologues and conversations)
Tasks: 40 questions (multiple choice, matching, map labeling, etc.)
Skills Tested: Understanding main ideas, details, opinions, and attitudes.
2. Reading
Time: 60 minutes
Academic: 3 long texts from books, journals, newspapers.
General: Extracts from books, ads, company handbooks, notices.
Tasks: 40 questions (true/false, matching headings, etc.)
3. Writing
Time: 60 minutes
Academic Task 1: Describe a graph, chart, map, or process.
General Task 1: Write a letter (formal/informal).
Task 2 (both): Write an essay on a given topic (opinion, problem-solution, etc.)
4. Speaking
Time: 11–14 minutes (face-to-face)
Part 1: Introduction and personal questions
Part 2: Cue card – speak on a topic for 1–2 minutes
Part 3: Discussion on broader issues related to the cue card topic
